Pre-writing lessons and activities
Pre-writing lessons and activities support pupils to learn new skills and develop suitable background knowledge before they complete the main piece of writing. For example, pre-writing includes direct teaching, think alouds, consideration for success criteria, building vocabulary and planning.
Pre-writing activities and lessons can be part of a single lesson, or span multiple lessons, depending on the objectives the teacher wants to achieve.
Across a term, it is advisable to spend 1/3 of teaching time on pre-writing, 1/3 of teaching time on pupils having the opportunity to write independently and 1/3 of teaching time on post-writing activities (e.g. feedback).
